Sean Mosher-Smith
http://www.echodesignlab.com Biography
My name is Sean Mosher-Smith, I got into design first off from a love of music, where I have spent a majority of my professional life as a creative, as well as a love for art. I spent 16 years at various record labels including RCA, The Sloan Group (a marketing and advertising agency), Virgin Records as Vice President and Creative Director and most recently Capitol Music Group before leaving to create my own company Echo Designlab. I have worked with artist as diverse as Christina Aguilera, Iggy Pop, Lenny Kravitz and Korn among many more (which you can see on my website) as well as International branding campaigns for Iceland Spring Water.
Where do you work? What do you do there?
I work in my Brooklyn, NY studio where I spend the day designing and directing for a wide range of clients, from Victorias Secret to Interscope records.
How long have you been in this field?
I have been in this field for 16 years. I have been designing, illustrating, photographing throughout this whole time.
What role did (are) you play(ing) in the project?
I designed the website and directed and/or designed all the work it contains.
What was (is) your inspiration for this project?
Starting my own company and trying to show the variety of work I have done in order to generate more work and get Echo Designlab off the ground, We have been in business for 3 months under this name.
What is in your equipment/gear setup?
I use Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Quark on a macBook Pro. I like the portability and the fact that you cant help where you are when inspiration hits, I switched to a laptop about 3 years ago because of this. I am able to meet clients, show work and find the right place to escape into my own world in order to create.
What are some websites you visit daily?
Muse (of course)
http://www.behance.com,
http://joshspear.com,
http://coolhunting.com
Who's work do you most enjoy?
I will always have a soft spot for Vaughan Oliver since it was the combination of the music he designs for (4ad) and his approach to design that got me in this to begin with, more modern designers like Peter Saville, Neville Brody, Tomato and Attik also always inspire me.
What advice can you share to people just getting into this field?
Find your style, create what you like and try hard not to conform too early, if you create your own style, people will call upon you for what you can bring to a project, your unique outlook. Get out every once and a while and meet peers, join some of the design networks mentioned above and see what others around the world are doing, it might lead you down a wonderful path. Remember why you do what you do and be creative every day and don't let ideas get away from you, write them down, sketch them, etc. Always be open to new ideas. Don't let anyone forget you when you leave the room.
